Patchouli Pogostemon cablin
Aromatic Description: The rich warmth of humid earth with a smoky depth punctuated by sweet and herbaceous notes.
Description
Patchouli is a classic treasure with an elegant heritage steeped in the beauty of Asian culture. For centuries, this fragrant herb has radiated its grounding warmth throughout Eastern medicine and textile trade across the globe. The potent, earthy aroma of dried patchouli leaves imbued carpets and woven wares with a protective quality that deterred insects and preserved fabrics during transport. As such, the patchouli fragrance became a status symbol associated with authentic, quality made Oriental wares.
Patchouli essential oil quickly became a popular ingredient among perfumers. With its complicated aroma of sweet earth, musk, wood and herb, patchouli imparts a regal and mature grounding presence in any formula. Patchouli essential oil is potent; only 1-2 drops are used to balance a blend. Because of its strength, patchouli has commonly been employed to mask offensive odors.
In aromatherapy, patchouli essential oil is used to nourish the skin by improving appearance and texture, mitigating infections and offering relief from fungal irritation. As with the patchouli herb, the essential oil makes for an effective natural insect repellent and provides prompt relief from painful insect bites. On a psychological and emotional level, patchouli hails as an ambassador of peace, helping us to balance our inner worlds with our outer environments.

Skincare: Patchouli essential oil is deeply emollient; softening and nourishing skin suffering from extreme conditions including dermatitis, dryness and sensitive irritation. This skin-loving essential oil is also highly antimicrobial, making it an excellent companion when managing minor dermal infections, fungal irritation and bug bites.
Circulatory Support: Various studies have shown that patchouli essential oil bears vasorelaxant properties. This may help to lower blood pressure and reduce the strain and discomfort of varicose veins and hemorrhoids. We love blending patchouli with geranium and helichyrsum italicum to reduce the discomfort from hemorrhoids. We love a good research paper! Here's more information:

Stress Relief: On those stressful days when we unconsiously crave stillness, patchouli's earthy, grounding fragrance smooths down frayed nerves and invites peace into the heart. Patchouli essential oil has been associated with feeling cool, calm and connected for decades- since its popularity as a social scent in the 1960's. Research submitted to the Japanese Journal of Pharmacology indicates that patchouli essential oil helps to rapidly reduce plasma adrenaline content- leading to prompt stress relief and overall nervous system support.

Mood Lifting: The wheel of life is in continual motion. Some days, the sun beams down with unbridled optimism. Other days, we experience the shadows of sadness and apathy. It's human to feel this way, despite how “unproductive” it may seem. Patchouli essential oil is our number one favorite oil to use for those dull, passionless and unmotivated moments. This comforting ally nourishes our hearts when feeling down in the dumps- reconnecting us with our joyful essence and helping us remember how to smile.

Surrender: It's easy to cling to a problem or situation that vexes us. Patchouli essential oil guides us to peacefully accept what we wish to change but cannot control. The rich, earthy fragrance of patchouli is a grounding refuge of comfort and grace- creating the safety we need so we can see beyond the immediate details of life. Patchouli helps us to go with the flow, reminding us that life happens for us, not to us. When we find ourselves feeling obstinate and oppositional, a breath of patchouli reminds us that we have the patience to resist impulsivity and the wisdom to release control.
